It's 1866 - the Emancipation Proclamation has been signed and the Civil War is over. Throughout the Antebellum South, freed slaves immediately begin to try to reestablish family bonds that had been broken under the chattel slavery system. Cassie and Ham, 2 former slaves, set out from Tennessee determined to find their son who was sold away fifteen years ago. They pick up friends and strangers along the way, but everyone soon discovers that freedom means different things to different people...
